Dave Kirk is Principal Tuba of the Houston Symphony, a position held since 1982. Since joining the Symphony, he has served on the faculty of Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where he is an Associate Professor. Aside from his work at the Shepherd School, he tutors many students in the Houston area. He also serves on the faculty of the Texas Music Festival. Mr. Kirk has appeared as a guest performer with the Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati Symphonies, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is an active recitalist and chamber music collaborator.
Mr. Kirk enjoys an international reputation as an effective teacher of musicianship and the physical aspects of wind playing. He has presented master classes throughout North America and in Japan.
Mr. Kirk studied at the Juilliard School with Don Harry. His other significant influences include David Waters, Chester Schmitz, Neal Tidwell, and Warren Deck. Dave Kirk resides in northwest Houston with his wife, two daughters, three cats, and several tubas.
